Deacon John Evans

Deacon John Henry Evans Jr., a loving husband, father (Daddy/Pops), grandfather, great-grandfather (Papa), brother (June), uncle, friend and so much more departed from this earthly life to take his eternal rest on Wednesday November 22, 2023. Born January 11, 1952, to the late John Henry Evans Sr., and Mildred Lucille Evans in Winston-Salem, NC. He attended the public schools where he graduated from Atkins High School in 1971. He served in the United States Navy after which he worked a few odd jobs before beginning his employment with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, where he worked 35 years before retiring. Deacon John Henry Evans Jr. was truly a man of valor in his service to God. Starting as a member at Saints Delight TVPH Church (Bishop John W. Hopper Sr.) he was taught, trained, and ordained to the office of Deacon. After serving there he joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church (Bishop John C. Parks), where he was a faithful and dedicated member, forming the Safety Team, and serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He had zeal for life that involved time with family/friends, Taekwondo (2nd degree black belt), cycling (instructor), bike riding, line dancing, a member of the VA club at Winston Lake Y, traveling and being a TRUE Washington Redskins fan. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Walter Durham, Hazel (Allison) Malloy, maternal grandparents George H. Evans Sr., and Mattie Evans. Deacon Evans will be lovingly remembered by his loving and supportive wife of 32 years Cellestine Evans, children Staci (Marquette) Henderson, Kenya (Antwonne) Newsome, John H Evans, III, Bernard Pate, Erica Morris, Parogio Stowe, Lakesha (Christopher) Weston; brothers Walter (Sandra) Evans and Tony Evans; in laws Leroy Morris, Shelia James, William James Jr, Loretta James; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV
