David Moore

David Michael Moore was born to the late Jane Elizabeth “Weeks” Caesar and the late Reverend D. W. Moore in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on August 4, 1960. He attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1979. Afterward, he attended Forsyth Technical Community College and received certification in Auto Body Repair. David joined Mount Zion Baptist Church and was baptized at the church during the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. K. O. P. Goodwin. He exercised the tenets of his faith as a devoted member of the Men’s Usher Board and a member of The Board of Trustees. David was an avid car enthusiast. He enjoyed designing and painting cars and motorcycles. He began his entrepreneurship with a house painting business. He later modified that business into an Auto Body Repair Shop; hence, Southside Rides was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He opened a second Auto Body Repair Shop in Charlotte, North Carolina. David was devoted to the promotion of human welfare and social reforms. He created a business model in Winston-Salem that taught Auto Body Repair work and mechanical repair skills to at-risk youth. This new venture involved collaborations with community leaders and the North Carolina Department of Corrections. The business involved educating youth on life skills, auto body repair, and the positive redirection of their paths in life. In 2005, David established the Southside Rides Foundation in Winston-Salem. He was awarded a $90,000 grant by the Winston-Salem Foundation and he hoped to address a critical need in the community: providing at-risk youth with practical life skills and mentorship through automotive education. Another component within the foundation was Project M.O.O.R.E. which was a mentorship program aimed toward at-risk youth and the formerly incarcerated in Winston-Salem. His vision to help young people evolved into a comprehensive program that combined technical training with life skills, pathways to employment and personal growth. David’s efforts did not go unnoticed in the community. His work gained considerable recognition in the media (both social and print media), and he was The Ministers Conference Social Justice Honoree, Men That Win Social Justice Honoree and his organization was The Winston-Salem Chronicle’s Non-Profit Agency of the Year. Following a brief illness, David Michael Moore peacefully passed away with his loving family at his side at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, on Thursday, March 19, 2026. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elliott Simons. Those family members who survive and who will forever cherish loving memories of him include Linda D. Moore, his wife of 43 years; two daughters, Candice Loyd and Jasmine Moore; two sons, Dexter (Katrina) Moore and Dominic Moore; three sisters, Dianna Jones, Hattie Culp and Pauline Moore; three brothers, Dennis Simons, Vaughan (Vonda) Caesar and Benjamin Moore; fifteen grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Selina Jones, Pamela Jones (Dwayne) Williams, and Karl (Leslie) Jones; a special great niece, Dr. Brooke Williams; a bonus son, Romi White; and many extended family members and dear friends.
